Leading green building summer university returns to Vienna for its 12th year

01/04/2022

A world renowned, international summer university programme, which looks at passive housing and sustainable construction, is returning in-person to Vienna this summer after two years online.

Green.Building.Solutions. (GBS) attracts built-environment students and professionals from across the globe to acquire in-depth expertise in sustainable construction and passive housing, within an intensive format.

Over three weeks, students receive first class teaching from notable academic and industry leaders in sustainable construction, and also have time to live in and explore Vienna.

This year’s GBS takes place from July 16 to August 7, 2022.

Now in its 12th year, GBS deals with the ecological, economic, technical and social aspects of sustainable planning and construction, transferring Austria’s first-hand ecological knowledge and engineering expertise to an international audience.

Participants are able to broaden their knowledge in fields such as passive house technology and energy efficiency, as they learn from academic experts in climate change and passive housing.

In nine modules students cover subjects including the circular economy, quality of life in and around buildings, green building design, passive house standards and socially inclusive and accessible urban space.

The final module is dedicated to group design work, taking in everything learnt in modules one to eight and applying it to a real-life case study.

Günther Jedliczka, CEO of OeAD student housing, which organises GBS, said: “It’s great to see GBS returning in person to Vienna this year.

“Austria is at the forefront of passive house design and GBS allows students to really take in this knowledge about green buildings and sustainability, and even see it in real life.”

“In recent years, housing, construction and urban planning have been put at the front foot of many world leader’s manifestos and it’s becoming essential for the next generation of professionals in the built environment sector to have the correct knowledge of green building and sustainability.”

OeAD student housing – part of Austria’s national agency for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research – operates GBS under a not-for-profit arrangement.

Registration is open until June 30, 2022.
